No Spotters Weekend in 2020…

With much sadness we have to announce that due to the uncertainty around COVID-19 we will not have a Spotters Weekend this year.

We waited until the last minute to cancel the reservations we had for a very cool weekend we had planned. But we think it’s important that many Spotters from all over the world can join, and right now there is just too much uncertainty in the world…

We hope we can make it happen some other time soon. In the meantime please keep meeting each other in your own city, or on your own city trips and send us pictures so we can all enjoy the community spirit together…

New “My spots” system!

We’re very excited to announce that the new “My spots” system is now live! From now on you’ll manage your articles, message Spotters and check your income here: https://edit.spottedbylocals.com

It’s 100% open source (WordPress.org), much “safer” and we think it looks and works a lot better. It’s also much easier to update / improve!

From now on DO NOT use the “old” link https://form.spottedbylocals.com that you may have bookmarked. Changes to articles are NOT recorded. This link will be inaccessible shortly when all cities are “live”.

It would be really great if you can help us test the system by checking if all your articles look good, by making some small edits to some of your articles and re-submitting them. Or even better: write a new article!

Please email Bart (bart@spottedbylocals.com) if you need any help, if something looks weird, something is not working as expected or if you have any suggestions for making it more user friendly/cool. Screenshots help a lot!

If you have any questions about your articles, please contact Sanne (sanne@spottedbylocals.com).

Our “policy” regarding COVID-19 (Corona)

Dearest Spotters,

We hope you are all safe & healthy. In all our 80 cities COVID-19 has been dominating the news, but slowly things are changing.

Via this message we want to advise you about what to do with your articles.

If your city is opening up again

Please update your articles and write new articles if you can! Now more than ever visitors will be looking for locally-owned spots.

What to do about current articles?
If certain types of spots (like bars or restaurants) are opening again, please check your spots, to see if they still exist and if something needs to be updated.

If all bars & restaurants or other types of spots in your city are still closed due to COVID-19, a visitor to your city will know this. Please don’t take the article offline (unless a spot is closed permanently, or details have changed). Do not add extra information in the article about temporary restrictions regarding COVID-19 in place.

Writing new articles?
Yes please 🙂 Now more than ever visitors will be looking for locally-owned and really quirky and cool spots. Parks, street art etc. will usually stay accessible.

Our website will get a big boost from new articles too by Google 🙂

If most of your spots are in-accessible or closed

As you know we pride ourselves in being one of the very few city guides with always up to date information. As counter-intuitive as it sounds: at this moment we ask you not to make any updates regarding the COVID-19 virus measures affecting your spots.

Why?
1) It is practically impossible for you to keep all details in all articles up to date with the latest information, also when this situation passes. We ourselves couldn’t handle the work involved in guaranteeing all spots to be up to date, both now and in the future. If some spots reflect the latest changes and others don’t, this will lead to confusion amongst readers. We want to avoid this.

2) We know many readers just love reading your articles even if they aren’t planning on traveling to your city in the near future. It would be a shame to deny our readers this pleasure, especially in these times 🙂

3) To save you lots of time.

What to do about current articles?
If all bars & restaurants in your city are closed due to COVID-19, a visitor to your city will know this. Please don’t take the article offline (unless a spot is closed permanently, or details have changed). Do not add extra information in the article about temporary restrictions regarding COVID-19 in place.

Writing new articles?
Continue if you can and write the articles as if there was no COVID-19. If you cannot find the inspiration to write about a certain spot or if you can’t visit the spot to take a picture, we totally understand if you decide to postpone writing this article.

If you have any questions or concerns about our advice, please contact Sanne (sanne@spottedbylocals.com)

Take care, stay safe. Big hugs,

Sanne & Bart

Free Guided Meditation by our Spotter Kristina!

Our Los Angeles Spotter Kristina is offering for free next week:
Guided Meditation for the Spotted By Locals community
Tuesday, April 14, 2020 at 19:00 GMT/NOON PST
Spaces available: 20
The meeting will be 40 minutes with time to connect with each other before and after the meditation.
My intention is to nurture community and connection, so I don’t want to just offer video meditations where I talk at a screen.
I will add additional meditation dates as needed.
To RSVP a spot, simply go to: KristinaNikolsWellness.com
Fill in the application for Meditation offering on the Home Page.
PLEASE BE SURE TO INDICATE “SBL” in the “How did you hear about this” section.
You will then receive a link to the Zoom meeting for the April 14th session.
This is a private session and not advertised, so it’s important to put “SBL” if they want to join the meeting with fellow Spotted By Locals. 🙂

Welcoming back our NYC Spotter, Nick!

I’m a copywriter for hotels and travel companies. As an Italian American, my favorite spots are ones with pizza, pasta, and gelato. I also like writing about cool museums, things to do on the waterfront, and Old New York spots that have stood the test of time.

We’re excited to be welcoming back our NYC Spotter, Nick!

Spotters get together in London!

This weekend of Brexit our ex-Spotter Angelina organized a weekend for former and current Spotters in her new hometown of London. Unfortunately we couldn’t be there ourselves… But from the pictures we saw (many of them we just couldn’t publish!) and what we read on social media it looked they had SO much fun!

Maya: “I was in the UK with this awesome group of mostly European folks when Brexit happened yesterday. The bar owner made a speech about how he was glad we were there, that he still feels European, and that we’re always welcome in his bar. 😭”

Ajuni: “It doesn‘t get much less Brexit than this! Thanks for organising the ultimate F*** Brexit gathering!”
